About the Event
The Purpose
Design in Mental Health Conference, Exhibition and Awards is the annual event where organisations and professionals interested in advancing the cause of good design in mental health settings meet to learn, share and explore collaboration.
The event is organised by Step Exhibitions with Design in Mental Health Network, a charity which aims to improve mental health outcomes by promoting knowledge exchange, co-production and quality standards in design in mental health settings. There is a profit share arrangement between the two organisations, and the funds raised will be declared by the Charity and be publicly available in their annual report.

If you are involved in the design, build, equipping, refurbishment, or management of facilities for mental health treatment, or are a clinician or academic in the field of mental health, Design in Mental Health is a place to be informed and inspired, share experience and best practice, discover new products and solutions, and to have meaningful conversations on the issues that matter.
The Venue
Design in Mental Health has a new home from 2024
The new venue for the annual Conference and Exhibition is Manchester Central, an iconic, award-winning venue with strong design and engineering traditions. This former Victorian train station is now a world-class events space and our move there will allow for the expansion of the event in both size and geographical reach.
We leave Coventry, our home for over ten years, with many fond memories and great pride in our roots in the Midlands. However, in order that the event can grow and continue to expand its contribution to driving excellence in mental health built-environments, it is time for a move.
As the name suggests, Manchester Central benefits from a city centre location and this, coupled with Manchester’s excellent transport links, means Design in Mental Health will be more accessible than ever before. This is important for both our UK-based visitors and our increasing international audience, which made up nearly 10% of delegates in 2023.
We are looking forward to the new opportunities the move brings to develop the community, grow the range of products and services showcased at the event, and to continue to attract leading names in the sector to speak at the Conference.
The Event Community
The Design in Mental Health community consists of a broad range of professionals and experts from around the world, spanning the public and private sectors and specialist charities.
Architects, Designers, Clinicians, Health Planners, Estates and Facilities Managers, Capital Projects Managers, Product Manufacturers, Contractors and Engineers are just some of the professions that benefit from the unique forum created each year by Design in Mental Health.
You can learn more about who attends Design in Mental Health in the 2023 Organisers’ Statement.
