Parkhead Hub: Health And Care Centre – NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
Nominee Information
Parkhead Hub is a pioneering net-zero healthcare and community facility in Glasgow’s East End, one of Scotland’s most deprived areas. As the largest health and social care hub in Scotland, it integrates acute, primary care, mental health, addiction support, homelessness services, and more in one accessible location. Services are delivered collaboratively by public and third-sector organisations to meet the needs of over 176,000 people.
Central to the regeneration of the East End, the Hub enables seamless collaboration among health and social care professionals, reducing fragmented care and improving access for residents. The facility’s design was shaped by extensive community involvement, ensuring it reflects local priorities. Features like the relocated Parkhead Library, a café, and bookable community rooms extend its role beyond clinical services, fostering connection and well-being.
Parkhead Hub aligns with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s and Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership’s vision of improving public health through integration, prevention, and early intervention. It offers person-centred care in a state-of-the-art facility, enhancing accessibility, and reducing hospital visits.
The Hub’s design incorporates natural light, green spaces, and thoughtful materials to create a calming environment and therapeutic for patients, staff, and visitors. It features a public plaza, courtyards, and intuitive wayfinding, improving accessibility and creating a welcoming atmosphere. The facility’s flexible design allows services to adapt to changing needs, ensuring resilience against future challenges, such as pandemics. Digital integration, including self-check-in kiosks and telehealth services, enhances operational efficiency.
Sustainability is at the heart of the Hub’s design. As a net-zero in operation facility, it uses renewable energy sources, high insulation standards, and a “fabric-first” approach to reduce energy consumption. The facility features a green roof, wildflower sedum carpet, and efficient water management systems, contributing to biodiversity and minimizing environmental impact. Energy-efficient systems, including air-source heat pumps and LED lighting, and a flexible layout that adapts to future healthcare needs.
Parkhead Hub is not only a health and care centre but also a community asset, generating over £19.5M in social value during construction, creating jobs, and providing long-term benefits for local residents.
