New and Improved En-Suite Door by Safehinge Primera
Nominee Information
Did you know our doors are the product of choice in the UK and other international markets?
We continuously gather feedback on our products to ensure we deliver on customer needs rather than taking an easier, faster route. Since last year, we have improved our anti-ligature en-suite door in response to customer feedback to ensure our products are the safest on the market while helping
patients recover.
29% of suicides occur on the bathroom door Our anti-ligature ensuite door is designed to provide patients privacy and maintain their dignity while being safely observed in the bathroom. Often in mental health settings, the bathroom door is removed to observe the patient and remove ligature risk from the door.
We were eager to address this challenge, so we worked closely with clinicians and patients to design our en-suite door. This product has reassured professionals that they don’t need to remove the door to have the ability to observe a patient and keep them safe.
So, what is our en-suite door? Our ensuite door, with no known ligature points, has saloon-style leaves that detach when a weight of 3kg or more is applied to disrupt ligature attempts. Additionally, clinicians can observe both a patient’s feet and head when they are behind the door to check they are safe without invading a person’s privacy.
It’s important to note that two of our leaf designs for the en-suite door have been created in collaboration with the charity Hospital rooms to provide leaf prints that promote a therapeutic environment. A percentage of all sales we
make from these prints is donated to this charity to support its mission of turning hospitals into warm and friendly places for people in recovery. This is to help do our part in supporting mental health spaces to move away from an environment that feels clinical.
Why did we make improvements to our En-suite Door?
The load release trigger has been reduced to a weight from 3kg – it was feedback received from OMH New York, and we are proud to be the only door in their design journal to achieve this threshold. This was to consider people recovering from poor mental health that may affect their weight, such as those experiencing eating disorders. Therefore, our engineering team got to work on upgrading the door with each leaf detaching from 3kg instead of 6kg to ensure all weights are detected on the door. This new improvement on the door has been launched worldwide to help clinicians carry out their job effectively. Yet, enables patients with all different levels of support the opportunity to have their privacy in the bathroom.
