Kosmos by Kingsway Group
Nominee Information
Kosmos is a revolutionary new system supporting effective management of door related ligature risk in mental health environments. Research in the UK and US identified that more than 50% of all self-harm attempts including a ligature took place using a door or door hardware. Kosmos has been developed specifically to improve a clinical teams’ ability to identify
and resolve risks before a ligature attempt takes place.
How is Kosmos different to other products in the marketplace? Kosmos is focused on warning clinical teams before a ligature attempt happens rather than, and as compared to the current situation in which, as numerous partners have told us, they only become aware of a ligature risk once an alarm is raised and when it’s too late as the service user is already attempting a ligature.
Kosmos includes a key feature whereby a pre-alarm is activated if unusual pressure is repeatedly applied to the door strip. This gives clinical teams valuable early warning and insight that a service user might be looking for a ligature point and critically in a state of distress. On annunciation of the pre-alarm staff can check on and monitor the service user to provide a heightened level of care. This is lifesaving technology reducing ligature risk in clinical and similar wards. Kosmos provides a high level of system flexibility making it cost effective for Trusts to integrate Kosmos into existing ward alarm systems such as PinPoint or SAS, and deploy in new build or existing ward environment with staff fully trained on set up, testing and reporting.
The development of Kosmos Based on conversations and workshops with clinical partners Kingsway developed Kosmos to replicate a ward’s layout in a geographical, floor plan based, user interface providing a clearer, more effective early warning system than that provided by conventional staff alarm systems which only provide a text description in wall-mounted panels. Originally designed to securely record door alarm activations and reduce reliance on third-party staff alarm systems the Kosmos system now provides wards and more broadly Trusts with direct access to all historical alarm data, management information on ward activity, audit logs and additional reporting information for CQC requests. Kosmos can also electronically log every time a bedroom, or ensuite door is opened or closed. This is also applicable to doors fitted with Vision Panels where information is electronically logged and can be useful
for determining frequency of observation checks on ward.
Results to date Kosmos by Kingsway has been received positively as a valuable new tool to improve ward safety. Prior to full launch 3-trial sites have been established with the first live site in May 2023.
