Design in Mental Health

Synopsis

Reflects on the development of Silverwood, a new inpatient mental health service in Chertsey, Surrey, commissioned by Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Our conversation will highlight the profound impact that creative engagement can have on emotional well-being. We will communicate our design journey through the choreography of architecture, art and Interior design. Unfolding stories for the vision of the new building, the approach to interior design and art strategy, and the value of a rigorous stakeholder and service user engagement process with people who use services, their families and carers. We will share how ideas were captured and communicated and how the outcomes from engagement sessions inspired the design.
A biophilic methodology introduces the theme of flowing rivers, reminiscent of a journey to recovery. We will discuss how deriving inspiration from local context and culture can support a sense of belonging for patients and how this in turn can create future opportunities for engagement, support and learning.
Our talk will be co presented by Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the Interior Designer and the Artist, whose artwork is woven throughout the building’s fabric and gently threads together the built environment with nature.
It will show how the Trust’s dedicated Lived Experience Group (LEG) co-chaired by a user of the services were consulted at all stages of the design process and their insights and experience were integrated into the project.
“Silverwood’s engagement with people is integral to ensuring the service is therapeutic, safe, and welcoming for all who need it.” Wendy Smith, Co-production and Community Engagement Officer, Surrey Coalition of Disabled People.
