Session 2: Experience Shaping Design

Time: 09:50 - 10:40

Date: Day 1 - 24 August

David Parkin Presentation
Lived Experience: the inhumanity of Seclusion and continuing fundamental flaws.

In 2015 Dave was sectioned for four months whilst experiencing his first bipolar manic episode. In 2018 he created ‘David Parkin’s Delusions of Grandeur’, a fully immersive installation that tells you everything you didn’t want to know about getting sectioned.

Dave will talk about his re-imagined Seclusion and cover areas where the NHS’s approach to mental health is still massively out of touch; from the smoking ban to exercise for ward bound patients. Funny, irreverent and charming, Dave will offer revelations from lived experience and touch on serious continuing mental health care problems.

Warning: there might be swearing and poetry.

Learning Points:

  • Funny yet serious incites from a service user and artist.
  • How do we solve a problem like Seclusion?
  • A common sense approach to some basic continuing mental health care issues.
