18 Mole Business Park – Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS
Nominee Information
18 Mole Business Park (18 MBP) in Leatherhead, Surrey, stands as an exemplary showcase of innovation and creativity in the provision of therapeutic environments for people with mental ill health, neurodevelopmental needs, and learning disabilities.
Unveiled in June 2023, 18 MBP addresses a crucial need for a centrally located, modern, and therapeutic clinical hub, benefiting service users, families, and carers across central Surrey. Additionally, it provides upgraded office accommodation for the Trust’s corporate services. The relocation of 20 services and 600 staff from multiple sites has fostered collaboration, facilitated joint clinics, and boosted overall productivity.
The transformation of 18 MBP began with a comprehensive overhaul, stripping the existing 1980s building to its core. A Category A office refurbishment upgraded the circulation areas and toilet cores and renewed mechanical and electrical engineering services. The subsequent Category B office refurbishment further enhanced the building.
The design philosophy of 18 MBP focuses on creating visually appealing and calming spaces. Earthy colour palettes, nature-inspired artwork, adjustable lighting, LED sky panels, full-height windows, and strategically placed greenery contribute to a therapeutic atmosphere. An artwork strategy, curated to reduce anxiety and improve mood, features throughout the building. Importantly, the design process actively involved service users, ensuring their voices were heard and incorporated into the final design.
The waiting area caters to diverse needs, including booths for individuals with neurodiverse requirements, a semi-enclosed area for children and young people with visually calming vinyl manifestations, and a main waiting area with various seating options. The building offers diverse clinic rooms, including individual consultation spaces, group sessions, and specialised therapy rooms for art and music therapy. Adjustable lighting in consultation rooms accommodates individuals with neurodevelopmental needs. Flexible furniture solutions, including booths and pod meeting rooms, prioritise wellness and adaptability.
Embracing cutting-edge technologies, 18 MBP incorporates smart working solutions, wireless networks, and videoconferencing facilities. Electronic displays assist with booking and maximising room utilisation. On-site family therapy and observation rooms leverage technology for remote viewing and unobtrusive observations
The exterior landscaping complements the interior design, with shrubs, small trees, and outdoor seating areas creating a visually appealing and natural environment. Enhanced accessibility measures, such as automated doors, step-free access, a lowered reception desk, accessible toilets, a publicly accessible changing space, ample wayfinding signage, and proximity to public transport, make the facility inclusive and convenient.
Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability, 18 MBP boasts 269 solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, daylight harvesting lighting schedules, and a focus on minimising running costs. This eco-friendly approach aligns with contemporary standards and underscores the Trust’s focus on a greener future.
The success of 18 MBP is attributed not only to its physical transformation but also to effective teamwork throughout the project. The seamless transfer of services and staff relocation demonstrates a collaborative effort.
18 MBP demonstrates innovation, creativity, and sustainability in healthcare infrastructure, setting a benchmark for excellence in community mental health, neurodevelopmental, and learning disabilities services.
