Fynn reduced-ligature task light

Lighting plays a critical role in humanising healthcare environments. When thoughtfully designed, it introduces visual warmth, softens architectural surfaces and helps create spaces that feel safe, calm and dignified rather than clinical and institutional.

Research has shown that providing patients with control over their immediate environment is one of the key design principles linked to reducing stress in psychiatric facilities (Ulrich et al., 2018). The ability to adjust lighting levels and influence “lights out” routines can significantly improve comfort, autonomy and emotional wellbeing. However, this sense of control can be undermined if systems are complex or unintuitive (Andrade & Devlin, 2015).

Fynn was developed specifically to address this balance between autonomy and protection. Designed exclusively for mental health environments, it enables patients to independently control three levels of brightness simply by touching the housing of the fixture. By reducing the requirement for additional switches or control panels, Fynn reduces potential ligature and tampering risks while maintaining ease of use.

Safety is engineered into every aspect of the product. The carefully sloped form has been designed to minimise ligature attachment points, while anti-tamper fixings and a robust cast aluminium body protect against interference and damage.

The 6mm shatter-resistant polycarbonate lens provides durability, and the product has been impact tested to IK10 – the highest classification for impact resistance. When sealed with anti-pick silicone, Fynn achieves an IP66 rating for water and dust resistance making it safe in the event of unexpected exposure to water.

Fynn’s energy-efficient LEDs are offered in two colour temperature options, both providing just the right amount of light for a calm and adaptable environment. Thoughtful layering of ambient and task lighting ensures spaces are illuminated where needed, supporting function without ever feeling harsh or over-lit

Fynn’s design moves away from overtly institutional aesthetics traditionally associated with reduced-ligature products. Available in six contemporary finishes, it contributes positively to interior schemes, reinforcing a sense of normality and domestic familiarity. This design-led approach ensures that safety does not come at the expense of dignity.
