Cygnet Elowen Hospital represents a transformative refurbishment project that places therapeutic design, recovery and co-production at its heart. Formerly a nursing home, it has been purposefully recreated as a specialist service for adults with eating disorders and complex personality disorders. It demonstrates how innovative, recovery-focused design can fundamentally enhance wellbeing and clinical outcomes.
Every aspect of Elowen has been carefully considered to create a safe, nurturing and non-institutional environment. The interior design reflects extensive research into how colour, texture and light influence mental health recovery. Considered colour choices, layered textures and meaningful artwork have been introduced to evoke calm and familiarity, reducing anxiety and helping individuals feel at home during what can be lengthy admissions. Observation areas, fixtures and safety features have been sensitively integrated to soften clinical barriers, ensuring the environment feels therapeutic rather than restrictive.
Flexibility and functionality underpin the internal layout. Two wards offer tailored, phased recovery pathways within spaces designed to adapt to changing needs. Communal areas encourage connection and engagement, while quieter sensory spaces support emotional regulation and reflection. Each space is designed to feel both safe and empowering, enabling individuals to rebuild independence and resilience.
The Autistic SPACE framework is a, neurodiversity-affirming tool designed to improve healthcare access and environmental support for autistic individuals. It focuses on five core needs: Sensory , Predictability, Acceptance, Communication, and Empathy. We referred to this framework whilst designing to ensure we understood and accommodated neurodivergent needs.
Externally, the hospital benefits from a unique location that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding Derbyshire landscape. Positioned near a country park yet close to local shops and cafés, Elowen supports reconnection with the community and promotes gradual reintegration into everyday life. Outdoor areas and views of nature enhance recovery by providing access to natural light, greenery and calm environments that support wellbeing and grounding.
Sustainability and efficiency were integral to the refurbishment. Durable, high-quality materials were carefully selected to meet infection prevention and safety requirements while providing warmth and longevity. Energy-efficient systems and thoughtful material choices ensure the building will remain environmentally responsible and cost-effective. Suppliers were challenged to develop innovative furniture and finishes that combine safety, sustainability and a homely aesthetic, demonstrating how healthcare environments can be both compliant and inspiring.
Central to Elowen’s success is the strength of its multidisciplinary design and delivery team. The Cygnet Design & Property team, clinical and operational colleagues along with experts by experience worked collaboratively. Coproducing the environment and care model from concept through to completion, constantly exploring creative solutions and challenging traditional approaches to mental health environments. This teamwork extended to manufacturers and suppliers, influencing product design across the sector and setting new standards for therapeutic healthcare interiors.
Cygnet Elowen Hospital is more than a refurbishment; it is a model for future mental health environments. By combining innovative design, sustainable thinking, strong collaboration and genuine co-production, the project delivers a visually engaging, flexible and deeply therapeutic space that actively enhances recovery and demonstrates what modern mental health care environments can achieve for patients and staff.
