Carmadillo Sensory Rocking Chair Developed By Cranium Medical Products

The Calmadillow Rocking Chair was developed to address something we repeatedly saw in mental health environments: furniture that is safe and durable, but rarely designed with the emotional and sensory needs of patients in mind.

For many people experiencing anxiety, agitation, or sensory dysregulation, movement can be grounding. Gentle rocking stimulates the vestibular system, which helps regulate the nervous system and can promote calm. Despite this being widely understood in therapeutic practice, very few clinical environments have furniture that safely enables this type of sensory regulation.

The Calmadillow was designed to change that.

The chair combines the therapeutic benefits of rhythmic rocking with the strict safety requirements of mental health settings. Its geometry, materials, and weight distribution were carefully engineered to prevent tipping while maintaining a smooth, controlled motion. Every edge, curve, and junction was designed with ligature-reduction and durability in mind, ensuring the chair can withstand the demanding environments of psychiatric units and care facilities.

However, safety alone was not the goal. We wanted to create something that felt human.

The design incorporates tactile arm textures for sensory engagement, and the option of both soft upholstered and wipe-clean finishes so facilities can tailor the chair to different patient needs. For some environments the upholstery can be calm and muted, while for others it can be vibrant and expressive to support sensory-seeking neurodiverse users.

The name Calmadillow reflects the philosophy behind the design. Like an armadillo that curls into a protective form, the chair subtly creates a sense of enclosure and security while allowing gentle motion that helps the body settle.

This project has been many years in development and has been informed by feedback from clinicians, care providers, academic researchers, families, and individuals with lived experience. Their insights shaped everything from the rocking arc to the tactile surfaces and material choices.

Ultimately, this chair exists for the moments that matter most in mental health care — when someone needs a space to settle, regulate, and feel safe.

If the Calmadillow succeeds in even a small way in making those moments easier, then it has achieved its purpose.
